An Islamist AK Party Supporter behind YouTube ban in Turkey

YouTube managed to be banned twice in Turkey within a week by having rulings from two separate courts consecutively.

The initial ruling came from Ankara Criminal Court on 17th January. Four days later, YouTube stated that they removed alleged videos and filed an appealed to lift the ban. However very same day, in another city, the Criminal Court of Sivas ruled to ban YouTube again. As of today, there are two seperate court orders to ban YouTube in Turkey.

As Turkish Traditional Media is almost totally under ruling Islamic AK Party’s control, YouTube emerged as an alternative free speech platform for opponent voices such as Yalcin Kucuk, Tuncay Ozkan and Nihat Genc. For this reason, surpression of internet based opposition is the one of highest priorities of Islamic AK Party government.

Although Turkish Courts are doing great job to silence internet based opposition, recently Islamic AK Party passed a new internet legislation to form an internet authority enabled by unrestricted powers to ban any internet site without court ruling.

Meanwhile yet another free speech platform, WordPress is still banned in Turkey since last six months.

Professor Ozcan was my student in English class and I was pleased with her progress … I taught the
Oxford accent …. recently I was in oral practice with a young man from Istanbul University and I got him to worked up … and he took the time to speak the perfect English accent! I was so pleased as a tutor in English that I /hung up/

YOU TUBE … I enjoy it but I guess there is a freedom of speech issue in Turks banning it … possibly teachers might ban it .. if it is time wasting and impose another form of internet communication ….
in its place. However, I see no reason to ban YOU TUBE other than that!

The reason cited by ALL international media outlets, not just those in Turkey, as to why YouTube was banned in Turkey was videos that insulted Atatürk and not videos that insulted the AK Party. Please, quit skewing what goes on in Turkey and blaming the AK Party for all of YOUR troubles. Turkey already has enough to deal with without you.

Banning of youtube is not request of AK Party. Actually, prime minister and leader of AK Party Tayyip Erdogan several times said that: “i enter youtube, so you can also enter”. AK party take out advertisement into youtube in last Turkis Locak Elections 2009, in spite of ban. Actually banning of youtube is requested especially by nationalist (some of them calls themselves also social democrat :) ). Nationalists dont want changing Turkey, people more free. But AK party changed a lot of things. Turkish people now is more free and Turkish economy is stronger than before 2000. Internet using is blossomed since 2000, after turkish telecom privitazation by AK Party. If Ak Party wants to ban youtube or internet, does not allow to increase number of internet users.
